Inside Longleat’s Spectacular ‘Legendary Worlds’ Festival of Light

Wiltshire’s most iconic winter event has officially opened its gates, and it is an amazing spectacle.

Longleat, the home of the UK’s original immersive lantern experience, launched its highly anticipated Festival of Light on Friday 7 November. This year, the Wiltshire estate is inviting families to walk in the footsteps of myths and gods with its brand-new theme: Legendary Worlds.

The launch is a double celebration for Longleat, coinciding with the historic 60th anniversary of its world-famous Safari Park. “Back in 1966 we were the first to open a Drive-Through Safari outside of Africa, and we were the first to bring lanterns to the UK over 10 years ago,” says Scott Ashman, Head of Operations at Longleat. “Creating extraordinary experiences is part of what we do, so it is fitting that this year guests can follow a 2.6-kilometre route through various mythical worlds and legends.”
We went along to opening night to experience the magic firsthand – scroll down to check out our photos and find everything you need to know before you book your festive day out.

The Highlights: What to Look Out For

The massive 2.6-kilometre trail features over 1,000 glowing lanterns beautifully laid out across the estate’s historic grounds. The level of detail this year is incredible, but the absolute showstoppers include:

  • The Lost City of Atlantis: This is the crown jewel of the 2026 trail. It’s an immersive, glowing undersea wonderland where the path takes you directly underneath a spectacular, life-sized blue whale lantern.
  • Epic Battles of Legend: Look out for the Norse god Thor battling the World Serpent, a towering and magnificent Trojan Horse, and the legendary Knights of the Round Table.
  • Mythical Beasts: The woodland paths and gardens are filled with colossal giants, fire-breathing dragons, phoenixes, forest fairies, and glowing creatures representing the signs of the Zodiac.

Festive Cheer Beyond the Lanterns

A ticket to the Festival of Light includes much more than just the main walking trail. If you’re planning a visit, make sure to leave time to enjoy the extra festive highlights scattered across the park:

  • The Enchanted Christmas Tree Show: Watch the UK’s largest singing Christmas tree put on a spectacular, synchronized light and music performance.
  • The Longleat House Light Show: Incredible, festive projections completely transform the historic facade of Longleat House.
  • Seasonal Market Huts: Perfect for grabbing a hot chocolate, mulled wine, or festive treats to keep you warm as you walk the trail.
