Royal Wootton Bassett’s town crier judged best in the South of England

Owen Collier, town crier, royal Wootton Bassett

Royal Wootton Bassett’s town crier Owen Collier has recently won the accolade of ‘South of England Champion’.

The competition was won at the Georgian Fayre in Blandford, Dorset where Mr Collier faced stiff competition from 18 others. He was judged amongst other things on the volume and clarity of his voice and the quality of his costume.

Owen’s outfit was specially made for him to wear on the ceremonial day that Wootton Bassett became  Royal Wootton Bassett. It is Napoleonic-inspired and features a maroon coat with gold trim and buttons, maroon breeches, a red waistcoat and a black velvet tricorn hat.

Owen Collier has been the town crier of Royal Wootton Bassett since 2005 and  his voice can often be heard on the High Street and Borough Fields Square at weekends.
